Musk Follow Tracker — Issue #11: Composer's Scientist and Starbase's Pop Star

Issue #11: Three BigTechAlert alerts in 31 minutes on May 22 — Musk followed Federico Cassano (@ellev3n11), the Cursor researcher building the Composer model SpaceX holds a $60B option on; unfollowed @SemiAnalysis_ just 25 hours after Issue #10's confirmed follow; and followed Nicki Minaj after her surprise appearance at Starbase for Starship Flight 12.

A Cursor AI researcher who trains the Composer model, a 25-hour unfollow of the AI compute analyst whose firm was cited in the SpaceX S-1, and a pop star who visited Starbase the previous day. Three signals in half an hour.

@ellev3n11: the person building what Musk promoted

Federico Cassano runs AI research at Cursor, specifically building and training the Composer series of models — Cursor's own agentic coding system 1. His X bio reads: "training composer @cursor_ai."
Cassano published the Composer 2 technical report in March 2026 2, and on May 18 tweeted that Cursor had completed its first training run using the Muon optimizer — "we now have a real research effort." Six hours before Musk followed him on May 22, Cassano posted a community question: "what do people want to see in composer-next?" 3

Musk's follow came at 09:17 UTC, roughly 2.5 hours after that tweet.
This is the fourth Cursor-related follow in this tracker:
  • Issue #3 (May 15): @cursor_ai — the corporate account
  • Issue #3 (May 15): @ClaudeDevs — Anthropic developer tooling adjacent to the Cursor ecosystem
  • Issue #8 (May 20): @sualehasif996 (Sualeh Asif) — Cursor's co-founder and CEO
  • Issue #11 (May 22): @ellev3n11 (Federico Cassano) — the researcher actually building the Composer model
The progression moved from the brand → the operator → the co-founder → the scientist doing the training. SpaceX's S-1 established that the company holds a $60B option to acquire Anysphere/Cursor and has already booked an $8.5B deferred service fee. Musk following the engineer writing the next version of the model they may own suggests operational familiarity, not passive observation.
Cassano's follower count as of today: 4,596. This is the follow that will have the most direct relevance if the SpaceX option on Anysphere is ever exercised.

@SemiAnalysis_ unfollowed — 25 hours later

At 09:46 UTC, BigTechAlert fired the opposite alert: Musk unfollowed @SemiAnalysis_.

The follow had been confirmed in Issue #10 at 08:46 UTC May 21 — exactly 25 hours earlier. Dylan Patel's SemiAnalysis firm publishes primary research on AI compute economics, hyperscaler capex, and inference pricing. The SpaceX S-1, filed May 20, cited SemiAnalysis research on AI infrastructure costs. Musk followed one day after the filing.
No public content from @SemiAnalysis_ in the 25-hour window appears to have triggered visible conflict. No public statement from Musk explains the reversal.
Two interpretations are live:
  1. Momentary follow, accidental or exploratory. Musk sometimes follows accounts briefly, apparently tests or scans them, and unfollows when they don't fit his signal stream. The SemiAnalysis account runs long-form technical threads rather than quick takes — a style that may not survive a daily feed curation.
  2. The S-1 follow was transactional. If the follow was specifically prompted by seeing SemiAnalysis cited in the prospectus, and Musk reviewed the account and found it less immediately useful than expected, unfollowing the same day is consistent with rapid triage.
The analytical layer SemiAnalysis represents — detailed compute cost modeling for xAI and SpaceX infrastructure — has not disappeared from the S-1. What is gone is the public signal that Musk treats Dylan Patel as a follow-worthy voice. Whether this changes anything for investors who moved on the Issue #10 follow is open.

@NICKIMINAJ: Starbase visit, SpaceX shoutout, then a follow

At 09:48 UTC — two minutes after the SemiAnalysis unfollow — Musk followed Nicki Minaj.

Nicki Minaj made a surprise appearance at SpaceX's Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, on May 21 for the Starship Flight 12 launch attempt 4. She appeared in the launch livestream, was handed a mic, and said: "Major shoutout to Elon! Elon, thank you for everything you're doing for humanity." 5 She later posted a video for her fans with the hashtags #Starbase and #Starships 6 — a post that drew 958K views, 54K likes, and 7,400 reposts.
Starship Flight 12 launched successfully on May 22, with the Ship completing a fiery planned splashdown in the Indian Ocean 7.

Minaj has 26.2M followers on X and a shared political background with Musk; CNN noted the two "share a similar political background having both become vocal supporters of President" Trump 8. The follow is a direct social reciprocity after a visible public endorsement. It carries no investment signal on its own terms.

Open threads

Issue #8 ghost unfollow remains unidentified. BigTechAlert has not fired a resolution alert.
SpaceX S-1: Roadshow June 8. Goldman Sachs lead. No price range amendment published yet. Starship Flight 12 success removes a key technical risk ahead of the roadshow.
Anthropic $30B round: Terms agreed at $900B valuation; close expected end of May. No confirmed close as of this writing.
Cursor/Anysphere: Musk now directly follows both the CEO (Sualeh Asif, @sualehasif996) and the Composer research lead (Federico Cassano, @ellev3n11). The personal follows suggest Musk is tracking the people who build the product, not just the company account.
